Albergue Santiago de Caminha is proud to be a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation
As a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, we endorse the common vision to address the root causes of plastic pollution.
- We commit to eliminate the plastic items we don’t need; innovate so all plastics we do need are designed to be safely reused, recycled, or composted; and circulate everything we use to keep it in the economy and out of the environment.- We don’t use of single-use bed sheets, individually wrapped in plastic.
- We have eliminated the distribution of amenities, such as single-use plastic bottles with shampoo and liquid soap.
- In the Albergue we don’t provide plastic items like dishes, cutlery, cups or straws for use.
- We chose to buy large-capacity containers of detergents for guests hygiene and for cleaning and disinfecting the Albergue, in order to reduce the amount of packaging.- All the plastic collected from our guests is placed in recycling bins. We intend to keep a record of the quantity and report it, as well as requesting the installation of an ecopoint closer to the Albergue and involving the local community in this effort for the common good.
By 2024 Albergue Santiago de Caminha commits to:
Eliminate 100% of disposable plastic bags from our value chain, both upstream (from suppliers) and downstream (from purchases made by pilgrims). We use large reusable bags for our purchases and normally use paper boxes that we reuse.
Develop awareness among our guests to reduce the usage of plastic bags during the local shopping for grocery and market. The change from plastic single use water bottles to canteens.
